Meaninglessness Glory in Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est It is sweet and proper to die for oneââ¬â¢s country. Sweet! And decorous! If in some smothering dreams you too could pace behind that wagon, my friend, you would not tell with such high zest to children ardent for some desperate glory that old lieâ⬠¦. Wilfred Owen titles his poem the Latin translation of what he refers to as ââ¬Å"The old Lieâ⬠(Dulce Et Decorum Est), and sets out to disprove it. Using poetry and imagery as his primary tools, Owen recalls the death of his friend in disturbing detail, displaying the meaninglessness of the ordeal. Owen attempts to deny the glory that many believe is to be had through dying in war. Instead of a more traditional argument, however, Owen opts for poetry. In his poem, he tells the tale of soldiers struggling. Cytokines, like histamine and leukotrienes, are secreted by damaged cells in Daveââ¬â¢s ankle. How do these cytokines cause inflammation? E-selectin are induced by cytokines from injured cells and they function like P-selectin. How does the application of ice to the ankle affect blood flow through the capillaries? It constricts the capillaries and decreases swelling and blood flow! How does the removal of ice from the ankle affect blood flow through the capillaries and the cytokines? The blood flow increases because it helps return the blood flow to normal. How does compression, which is provided by an elastic (Ace) bandage wrapped around the damaged ankle, decrease inflammation? It physically constricts the blood vessels which reduces pain and swelling. How does elevation of the damaged ankle decrease inflammation? It increases blood flow back to the heart which is important when it comes to swelling. Part II: What problems are there in Suzieââ¬â¢s life, and does she exhibit any peculiar signs and symptoms? She feels neglected by her mom. She felt faint and weak!!! And skips breakfast. She doesnââ¬â¢t seem to get attention nor seem happy. Why did Suzie pass out when she stood up? She had an inadequate amount of oxygen and blood flow. Why did Suzieââ¬â¢s mother place Suzieââ¬â¢s feet on a chair? To increase blood circulation to the brain. Why did Suzie feel as if she had no energy at the doctorââ¬â¢s office? She hadnââ¬â¢t eaten breakfast. Make an initial speculation about Suzieââ¬â¢s condition at this time. Assuming that your speculation is true, what do you think the doctor will find in the results of Suzieââ¬â¢s physical examination? She probably is malnourished and has health complications because of it like low blood pressure and drastic weight loss. Part III: What new signs and symptoms does Suzie exhibit that would concern you if you were the doctor? She has low nutrient levels!!!! And is extremely malnourished and looks unhealthy too. Do you wish to make any further speculation about Suzieââ¬â¢s condition at this time? Assuming that your speculation is true, what do you think the doctor will find in the results of Suzieââ¬â¢s physical examination? She definitely has an eating disorder, and her lack of nutrients will affect her healthâ⬠¦ Part IV: Is Suzieââ¬â¢s weight reasonable for her height? There is no way she can be healthy living like this. Part V: Assuming that the ion levels in the blood plasma are similar to those in the interstitial fluid, what is the effect of low potassium levels on the membrane potential of Suzieââ¬â¢s nerve and muscles? It can cause them to become weak in their contractions andlowlevels are lowering her nerve abilities as well. Do We Need to Learn New Languages Anymore If Computers Know Them All? Language is one of the most complex entities known to people. We make use of a variety of languages around the world. Each person is even born with a mother tongue. Yet, we have not been able to completely understand the workings of a language. That is because language is not a manmade entity. Human beings did not sit down one day and decide to create different languages. According to the ââ¬Å"Tower of Babelâ⬠account, the Lord Almighty created different languages in an effort to deter man from pursuing this evil project of building a tower up to heaven. Humans have thus found it extremely difficult to understand how language really works. We are able to use a language easily and translate from one language to another. When we try to teach the computer to do the same, we find it extremely difficult to get good results. In order to teach the computer to translate properly, we need to provide all the rules pertaining to a specific language. However, since we ourselves do not understand how languages work, we are not able to automate this process successfully. We do not even understand how our mind processes language and how we are able to translate a language perfectly using the human mind. When a computer translates from one language to another, the results are mediocre at best and ridiculously humorous at worst. There is no evidence to prove that we are making any progress in our understanding of languages.
